Credit cards can be necessary.

WE HAVE OBLIGATIONS TO YOU. WE TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY.

In these pages we've often said that it's hard to get by in today's economy without credit cards. We believe that's true. You usually need a credit card when traveling to rent cars, to stay at hotels and motels and to entertain. Shopping is much easier when you use a credit card. That's especially true on the Internet, where it's just about mandatory to have a card to buy on-line.

But the use of credit is a double-sided coin. The flip side of convenience is that it's easy to get overextended and to get into trouble or, in the extreme, to even face financial ruin.

It's deceptively easy to get overextended using credit. We've done it ourselves.

We pledge to you that we won't knowingly offer a credit card or financial advice that's illegal or unethical. We won't knowingly present you with credit cards that are predatory in nature-- that is, cards that are designed to ensnare you into unfairly high interest rates or charges and which trap you into never ending payments. Whenever there's a place for a caveat, we'll point it out to you.

You should also read our Terms of Use to understand what your rights and obligations are when you contact credit card providers. (They are third parties. We don't take applications or issue cards ourselves.)

To help you make smart decisions please go to our sections containing articles on credit and lists of tools and resources. There's a wealth of information there waiting for you.

If you need help with your bills and credit you can find out how to repair your credit here. We also offer you sources for debt consolidation programs that work.

It's true that, in the end, each of us is responsible for his or her own use of credit. But we pledge to help you to guard against unethical and predatory card issuers and to offer you the dependable information you need to make smart decisions.

We care about what you think. If you have any suggestions please e-mail us. If you ever have any unpleasant experiences with credit card sources that you deal with through our site, please let us know.
