When you
need help.
Help is available when you need it. Some of the best ways to take charge
of your life and to repair your credit are:
- Self help
- Credit
repair and debt consolidation companies
- Law firms
who repair credit and who provide legal advice and services such as
bankruptcy.
If you are a disciplined person and you can follow instructions, then
self help may be for you. (Perhaps your current financial crisis is no
fault of your own-- an illness, a family emergency or an accident, for
example.) An excellent way to structure a plan is with a self help book.
See "The Credit Repair Kit," lower left hand column.
But if you believe that your credit problems are really a result of your
own inattention or perhaps from your overextending on credit (right now
it's time to be brutally honest with yourself) then you probably need
a professional to set up a structured plan for you.
Using a professional has excellent advantages:
- Peace
of Mind. Knowing that you have a professional-- even your own attorney--
working for you can be the load off your shoulders that you've been
seeking
- Professionals
are skilled at negotiating with creditors to lower the interest rates
on your bills
- Creditors
are more likely to accept a debt restructure program from an established
professional than from an individual debtor who's already missing payments
- You can
consolidate all your bills into one periodic payment that goes to the
counseling service -- then they pay each of your creditors from that
amount
- Your creditors
and all those rude bill collectors will stop hounding you as the counselors
screen them for you (as long as you keep your payment agreement)
- Professionals
can help you find discipline and self control and help you to change
your spending habits
- A law
firm can counsel you on other alternatives such as bankruptcy (but make
choosing bankruptcy a last resort!).
